The Best Tailwater in Australia

Experience fly fishing at its best on Australia’s premier fly fishery, the Goulburn River. Along the 75 kilometres stretch of Blue Ribbon tailwater, you will find an abundance of mayfly and caddis, producing some of the best dry fly fishing in the country. It also has teriffic grasshopper fishing in the warmer months, and hatches that persist right through until the end of May.

But, the Goulburn is not your only option; rivers like Jamieson, Howqua, Delatite, and Big also offer fantastic trout fishing opportunities up in the hills. Think mountain streams with stunning scenery and eager fish eating dry flies. Closer to home, Goulburn River tributaries like the Rubicon and Acheron offer excellent fly fishing for larger wild browns.

We can also arrange visits to historically significant fly fishing locations such as Mr. Findlay’s Water Race, and we have private access to numerous properties right across the district.

We promise you an unmatched fly fishing experience in the Goulburn Valley. Starting from our Flyshop in Alexandra, enjoy four days of guided fishing with no set agenda, letting us mould your trip based on the conditions and your preferences each day.

Accommodation

Upon arrival, you will be shown to your comfortable private accommodation. After settling in, join us back at our base for a complementary BBQ dinner and trip planning session. While the remainder of the trip is prescribed as self-catering, the accommodation has a full kitchen, and there are numerous restaurants and cafes within walking distance, as well as a supermarket.

Fishing Experience

Day-to-day, there are no limitations to what we can do. Be it drift boat, walk-wade, or even specialist instruction in particular fishing techniques, streamcraft, flycasting, or even beginner lessons. Whatever your needs; we have you covered. You can drift as a group or split boats into different areas. Fish as a group, or put beginners with our best instructors while the more experienced members go drifting with our best guides. We organise each day as per your preference.

Experienced fly fishers will relish the flexible itinerary and ability to walk/wade fish or drift boat on any given day. Beginners are also well-catered for, with instructors able to take beginners on a journey from never having held a rod to catching fish on the drift boat after a couple of days of tuition.

Please note that while this trip is suggested as a Sunday to Friday package, it can be run at any time. Arriving on a Sunday allows us to fish through the week when there are fewer people on the river. But we can tailor the dates to suit your group.

I have been fly fishing for trout in the south Island of New Zealand for a few years now with the GVFFC boys. These are true professionals and totally committed to ensure that all anglers get the most out of the weeks fishing trip. All l have to do is get to queenstown. All transport, accommodation, food, guiding and flies are provided. I am booked for a week in 2019 and cannot wait. Absolutely great experience doing the one day learn to fly fish course. Anthony taught us to cast in the morning, salvaged lunch when I messed things up, and got us both to catch fish on dry flies on our first time fly fishing. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to learn to fly fish. The instructor knew the river like the back of his hand, had access to all the properties and seemed to know the fish on a first name basis. Thanks for the great day on the river. I hope to come back and learn more after Christmas. PS- Seeing platypus in the wild was a real bonus 👍

drift fishing on the G with antony is one of the finest fishing experiences i've had. antony will not only put you onto fish but improve your fish craft and insect knowledge in one session. you will be a better fisherman/woman after this tranquil, informative and exhilerating experience. antony and his team care deeply about the river and are not looking to exploit it's fishing - rather to preserve it. i wish i could say the same about all guiding operations. thanks again antony - looking forward to the next one.

The guys at GVFFC are simply the best when it comes to fly fishing and guiding the Goulburn, Rubicon, Steavenson and other rivers in the area - nobody else comes close. I was lucky enough to have a day of guiding on the Goulburn recently, and their knowledge of the river is nothing short of incredible. I consider myself a fairly experienced fly fisher, but the level of advice and expertise they were able to offer was really eye opening. Everything from reading the water, to new tactics, to local knowledge of trout behaviour and which flies work best in which conditions - it's amazing just how much they can improve your fishing. To top it all off, they're great guys with a real passion for sustainable fishing. Do yourself a favour and book an experience with them - you won't regret it.
