NEW for season 2020-2021 is our ‘Goulburn Adventure’. Pull together a group of friends and come fish the majestic Goulburn River from our drift boats, and some of the smaller feeder streams of the area; including the enormous Lake Eildon Catchment.

The Goulburn is the best tailwater in the country. It has over sixty kilometres of premium trout water, with predicatble cold water flows and amazing weed beds that are home to huge populations of insects. 95% of the fishing is with dry flies. It also has a great variety of fishing opportunities. Think sight fishing to edgewater feeders, nymphing gravel bars, big hatches complete with lots of rising fish, and excellent streamer fishing with big flies.

But it’s not just about the Goulburn. Rivers like the Jamieson, Howqua, Delatite and Big, conjure up black and white images of our pioneering forefathers, exploring wild places on horseback and catching large numbers of trout on the fly. This trip will give participants the opportunity to retrace the steps of these early mountain men, fishing these legendary streams high up in the hills, where the trout are eager and the life expectancy of a dry fly is not very long at all.

These main rivers aside, there are literally a dozen smaller, unnamed streams that flow out of these hills that provide plenty of scope for exploration. We know these creeks like the back of our hands and they are for the most part, a dry fly fishers paradise.

We also have private access to the larger lowland rivers including the Rubicon and Acheron. The former having featured in much of the writings of the late, great David Scholes where features like Mr Findlay’s Water Race can still be found. We can even arrange a visit and possible fish of this fabled water for those wanting to walk in Scholes’ footsteps and experience a genuine piece of Australian fly fishing history.

Included in the price are five nights of comfortable accommodation, five full days guided fishing (combination of walk/wade and/or drift boat), all lunches, use of all gear and flies, transport in modern 4WD vehicles, as well as a B.B.Q. dinner at our base of operations on the first night of the trip. We can even arrange transportation to and from Melbourne Airport at no additional charge.

This trip is for groups of fly fishers wanting to have a real adventure close to home. It’s also a great way to make up for a lost New Zealand trip given there will be no international travel this summer. It is also an excellent option for interstate fly fishers who may never have experienced fishing on this excellent tailwater.

Sample Itinerary

Please note that this is only a sample itinerary. We can run this trip based solely on drift boat fishing for those wanting to fish from the luxury of our boats every day.

DAY 1

Meet at our base of operations in Alexandra and settle into your accommodation for the first of five nights. Planning session with the guides at our store and a complementary B.B.Q. dinner with the guides.

DAY 2

Drift boat the Goulburn River Section 1 Eildon to Thornton. Full Day.

DAY 3:

4WD trip into the hills to chase fish in small water with three weights and dry flies.

DAY 4:

Drift boat the Goulburn River Section 2 Thornton to Alexandra. Full Day.

DAY 5:

Walk – Wade fish on a small stream in the region. Early B.B.Q. dinner then back out for an evening drift on the Goulburn River to catch the evening rise.

DAY 6:

Drift boat the Goulburn River Section 3 Alexandra to Molesworth. Full Day. Depart for home that night or arrange an additional night of accommodation so that we can fish the evening rise.

Each of our boats comfortably accommodates two fly fishers. They are safe, stable and very comfortable. Casting braces make for easy standing/fishing, although it’s a real pleasure to fish while sitting in these boats.

This trip begins and ends at our Flyshop in Alexandra, the base of operations for your five days of fly fishing the Goulburn Valley.

Upon arrival you will be greeted by our team and shown to your accommodation. Once checked in and unpacked, you are invited back to our establishment for a complementary B.B.Q. and planning session. Armed with all the latest intel from our recent guided trips, and using the huge topo maps on the wall of our shop, a plan will be formulated that takes into account the needs and wishes of your group.

There are no limitations on what we can do day to day, including the amount of time we fish. We are here to ensure that you have the best trip possible, whatever that entails.

You may choose to fish as a group with two to four boats sharing a section of river and remaining within shouting distance. This is a lot of fun and a very social experience, especially when you are hooking fish and keeping a light-hearted score! Or you may wish to split boats into different areas, or send one group to a small stream while another fishes from the boat, preferring to meet up at day’s end. You may even like to start early, have a mid-afternoon siesta and then go back out for an evening drift to catch the hatch.

Whatever your preference may be, we can make it happen.

This is a trip like no other in Australia and represents amazing value for money. With some of the most experienced fishing guides in the country available to you for the duration of your visit, and with no set agenda other than to make the most of your time in the area, this is a unique package that can easily fill the void of a cancelled New Zealand trip.

Accommodation will take the form of comfortable private homes or local hotels. Upgrades to the accommodation are available for those who want to spoil themselves – with the potential for non-fishing partners to enjoy a trip away as well.

Please phone to discuss if this may be of interest, as we have access to some spectacular properties along the river for only $500 more per person.

All lunches are provided on the guided days, with the only out of pocket expenses being breakfasts/dinners, alcohol and fishing licenses.

We will provide you with two to four of our most experienced guides and a drift boat (for each pair of anglers), all flies; as well as the use of any gear if required.

Whilst the sample itinerary of three days drifting and two of walk-wade fishing via 4WD, this is only one of any number of configurations. You will have a 4WD, guide and boat available to you for the duration of your trip with no set agenda other than to find fish and have fun.

So, what are you waiting for. Call up a fishing partner or organise a small group to book for a great six day escape to the Goulburn Valley.

Phone 03 5773 2513  or 0418 995 611 to discuss the options. We are available from 8am – 10pm, every day.
