The Fishing Experience in Southland
Discover the pinnacle of fly fishing on New Zealand’s South Island, where clear, pristine waters provide unparalleled opportunities to target trophy trout. The Southland region boasts an incredible variety of waterways, from meandering spring creeks to freestone rivers, tailwaters, and stunning lakes, offering something for every angler.
Targeting Trophy Trout:
The hallmark of this trip is fishing predominantly with dry flies to sighted fish, often in breathtakingly clear water where the visual experience is second to none. Whether you’re casting to trophy-sized trout on larger valley rivers or exploring more intimate streams where the average fish still tips the scales at 4lb, every outing promises plenty of memorable moments and exciting encounters.
Fishing for All Skill Levels:
Our trips cater to anglers of all abilities and fitness levels. Enjoy easy wading on small, shingle-bed rivers or take on the challenge of the true trophy waters of the region. Wherever you fish, you’ll find expert guidance tailored to your skills and preferences, and a pace that suits your needs.
Seasonal Highlights:
High Summer (January – February): This is the time to experience explosive dry fly action, with cicadas and willow grubs providing the perfect opportunity for big fish on the hunt. Summer fishing is at its best with rubber-leg flies and sippers locked into willow grubs.
Autumn (March – April): As the weather cools, the mayfly hatches begin, offering some of the most magical dry fly opportunities of the year. The slower pace during autumn offers a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for seasoned anglers seeking a quieter experience.
