Since 1994
Goulburn Valley Fly Fishing Centre began in Thornton in 1994.
We opened Victoria’s first destination fly-fishing shop and began guiding the rivers around us. In those early years we also introduced guided floating to the Goulburn, initially from inflatable rafts.
In the early 2000s we began importing purpose-built drift boats. They changed the way we could fish the river and eventually became the foundation of our Goulburn guiding operation.
More than thirty years later, the shopfront has closed and the business has changed, but the work itself remains remarkably familiar.
We still guide the Goulburn.
We still teach people how to fly fish.
And many of the anglers who first came through the door in Thornton years ago still fish and travel with us.
Today GVFFC is focused entirely on guiding, tuition and hosted fly-fishing travel.

There is no single way into fly fishing.
Some people begin with a two-day workshop. Others prefer a private lesson. Some already fish and simply want a guide who knows the river. Others have spent decades with a fly rod and are looking for their next destination.
Our job is to meet you at that point.

For complete beginners and developing anglers, we offer two-day beginner workshops, private fly-fishing lessons and streamcraft tuition.
The emphasis is practical. Casting matters, but so does reading water, approaching fish, choosing a presentation and understanding why something works.

Fish
The Goulburn has been our home water since the business began.
We offer private walk-and-wade guiding, half-day and full-day drift boat trips, multi-boat days and the four-day Goulburn River Journey.
Trips are private to your booking, with the fishing and river section chosen around the anglers and the conditions.

Travel
For anglers wanting to go further, we host small-group fishing programs in Southland, New Zealand; Montana and the greater Yellowstone region; and Trevelin, Patagonia.
They are deliberately different journeys.
New Zealand is centred on clear-water sight fishing and a small country base. Montana is a thirteen-day journey through several great fishing regions of the American West. Patagonia combines serious fishing with a genuinely high-end lodge experience.

The Goulburn
This river is where the business was built.
The Goulburn is a regulated tailwater, changing considerably with releases from Lake Eildon as it moves downstream through Thornton, Alexandra and towards Molesworth.
After thousands of guided days, it remains capable of surprising us.
That is part of the attraction.
Our guide team now operates six purpose-built drift boats, allowing us to fish individual anglers, pairs and larger private groups while maintaining no more than two anglers in each boat.
For people who want to see more of the river, The Goulburn River Journey follows it over several consecutive days, allowing the changing character of the river to become part of the experience.
More Than One Generation of Anglers
One of the most rewarding parts of operating for this long is seeing how people’s fishing changes.
Someone may first arrive knowing almost nothing about fly fishing.
A lesson becomes a guided day.
A guided day becomes a season of fishing independently.
Years later, the same person may be standing beside us in Southland or climbing into a drift boat on the Missouri.
Not everyone follows that path, nor should they.
Some people simply want one peaceful day on the Goulburn.
Both are equally valid reasons to fish.
What matters is having somewhere sensible to start and people you can come back to when you need them.
Beyond Australia
Our international programs grew from the same approach we use at home: spend enough time somewhere to know it properly, work with good people and keep the group small enough to look after personally.
Southland, New Zealand has been part of our guiding life since 2000.
Montana has been personally hosted by GVFFC since 2010.
Patagonia is operated in partnership with Patagonia River Guides from their Trevelin lodge.
We do not attempt to replace the local guides in those destinations. They are precisely why the programs work.
Our role is to know the guests, know the program and bring the pieces together.

Why Fish With GVFFC?
There is no complicated answer.
We have been doing this for a long time.
The business was established in 1994 and has remained centred on fly fishing ever since. We introduced guided floating to the Goulburn, later built a purpose-designed drift-boat operation, developed long-running teaching programs and established international trips that many guests now return to repeatedly.
The scale remains deliberately personal.
Local guided trips are private.
Drift boats carry no more than two anglers.
Our international departures remain small.
And when you contact GVFFC, you can still speak directly with the people organising the fishing.
Experience matters, but only if it makes the day better for the person standing beside you.
That remains the point.
Where Will Fly Fishing Take You?
Perhaps nowhere very far.
It may simply give you a reason to stand beside the Goulburn for a few quiet hours and think about nothing else.
Or it may eventually put you beside a brown trout in a Southland spring creek, in a drift boat on the Missouri, or returning to a lodge beneath the Andes after a day in Patagonia.
There is no required progression.
