Half day or full day?

A half day to find your feet

A good first lesson, or a chance to sort out one thing that’s been giving you trouble. We can start with a short cast on grass, then take it to the water. Already fishing? Bring the issue that keeps letting you down and we can spend the session on that instead.

A full day to put it together

Choose the full day when you’d like more time fishing with your instructor. You can practise a cast, use it on a run, then try it again where a faster current runs between you and the fly. There’s time to watch what the fly does and make the next cast with that in mind.

We’ve been teaching on the Goulburn for more than 30 years. One thing we come back to is giving every cast a purpose. A roll cast makes more sense when there’s a tree behind you. We’ll show you the cast, let you try it, then help you change one thing at a time. The aim is a fly that lands where you meant it to, not a long cast for its own sake.

Beside the water, we might collect insects to compare with the flies in the box. Then we’ll look for a place a trout could hold and give that fly a drift. On moving water, watching the line tells you why a well-placed fly suddenly starts to drag and we can set about perfecting mending and line management.

For a first lesson we can cover setting up the rod, wading safely and what to do when a trout takes, from lifting the rod to landing the fish. For a returning angler we might spend that same time on accuracy, dry-fly presentation or fishing a nymph below the surface. We finish with something specific to practise next time.
