Spend a day exploring local trout water with a GVFFC guide. We choose the water around conditions and your fishing interests, help with the approach and presentation, and adjust the plan as the day develops.

You might be visiting the district for the first time, returning to a river you already enjoy or bringing a friend for a day together. Some anglers welcome regular advice; others prefer to settle into the fishing with help only when it is useful.

The emphasis is on fishing. Your guide takes care of the decisions and practical arrangements that help you make the most of the session.

Guided Fishing Options

Prices cover one guide and up to two anglers. They are for the entire session, not per person. You can attend alone or share the trip with a friend or partner for the same total price.

Flies are included, and rods, reels, leaders and waders can be supplied where required. A A$100 deposit secures your booking, with the balance payable on the day.

A Fishing Day Built Around You

Before the trip, we discuss your experience, the fishing you enjoy and any preferences about walking, wading or the pace of the day. That helps us select suitable water and prepare the equipment.

Once beside the river, we look at what is happening. We may spend time watching a feeding fish and working out an approach, or begin searching likely water with a fly suited to the conditions. Your guide helps with fly choice, positioning and line control, explaining as much or as little as you find useful.

The plan can change as the fishing develops. Sometimes it is worth staying with a particular run or feeding opportunity; at other times, another approach or a change of location makes more sense.

There is no fixed teaching timetable to work through. Instruction takes place as it becomes relevant to the fishing.

Local Water, Chosen for the Conditions

Our home waters are the Goulburn and the nearby rivers and streams of the Alexandra and Thornton district. The Goulburn provides opportunities to work runs, gravel edges, banks and changing currents, while smaller streams offer a different scale of fishing.

The choice depends on river height, clarity, weather, access and what you would like from the day. Tell us when you have a particular river or style of fishing in mind, and we will discuss whether it is a suitable option for your visit.

We do not promise the same location on every booking. The value of local guiding is being able to make a considered choice rather than commit to a piece of water regardless of how it is fishing.

What Your Guide Adds

A guide’s contribution is often a series of small decisions: approaching from a different angle, shortening the line, changing the depth of the fly or recognising that a promising-looking stretch is not producing.

We help you work through those decisions without unnecessarily interrupting the fishing. For an angler developing their skills, that may involve regular explanations and corrections. For an experienced angler, it may mean discussing an approach, setting up for the opportunity and then allowing space to fish.

No guide can guarantee a catch. What we provide is local knowledge, practical help and the ability to adapt as conditions change.

Access, Walking and Wading

Knowing the district includes knowing how to reach the water. We choose access points with the river conditions, available time and your walking and wading preferences in mind, helping avoid unnecessary searching between fishing spots.

Some locations involve only a short approach; others require more walking or movement over uneven ground. Wading requirements also vary with the water selected.

Please tell us about any mobility concerns or limitations before booking. We can discuss suitable options and the likely demands of the day rather than assume every angler wants—or can comfortably manage—the same type of water.

Come Alone or Fish With a Companion

A solo booking gives you a guide working entirely with your fishing. With two anglers, the trip remains private to your booking, with both people receiving guidance during the session.

The way we cover the water depends on the location. On a broader stretch there may be room to fish different positions, while a small pool or a particular sighted fish can call for taking turns. Your guide helps organise the fishing so that both anglers are involved.

Friends and partners do not need identical experience levels, but it helps to discuss significant differences when booking. We can then recommend an approach that makes the day worthwhile for both.

Half Day or Full Day?

Half-Day Guided Fishing

Approximately five hours — A$590 for one or two anglers

A half day suits someone with limited time, a visitor fitting fishing into a short stay or an angler who prefers a shorter session outdoors. We concentrate on suitable water and make the best use of the time available.

Starting times and the fishing plan are discussed when arranging the trip, taking the season, conditions and guide availability into account.

Full-Day Guided Fishing

Approximately eight hours — A$790 for one or two anglers

A full day gives more time to work through the selected water, respond to changing activity and try a different approach where necessary. There is also more room for breaks, questions and the practical demands of moving between locations.

For anglers travelling specifically to fish the district, the longer session offers a fuller day on the water without having to compress the experience.

Lunch is a break beside the river rather than a catered inclusion, so please bring something to eat.

Guiding on the Goulburn Since 1994

Goulburn Valley Fly Fishing Centre has guided on the Goulburn and nearby rivers since 1994. That history includes changing seasons, river levels and the many different ways anglers approach a day on the water.

Our guiding combines that accumulated local knowledge with attention to the person fishing. Choosing the water is part of the job; so is recognising when someone needs an explanation, a different approach or simply time to enjoy the fishing.

Trips are conducted by the GVFFC guiding team. Returning clients are welcome to request a particular guide, and we will check their availability. New clients can discuss their experience and preferences with Anthony when arranging the booking.

Is Guided Fishing the Right Choice?

Guided fishing suits anglers whose main aim is to spend the session fishing with local assistance. You do not need to be an expert, and advice can be incorporated throughout the day.

For someone who has never fly fished, a Private Fly Fishing Lesson may provide a more useful starting point, combining the foundations with practical fishing. Anglers who can already cast but want a session specifically devoted to reading water and improving presentation may prefer a Private Streamcraft Lesson.

Equipment, Transport and What to Bring

Your guided session includes an experienced GVFFC guide, all flies and drinking water. Rods, reels, leaders and waders can be supplied where required. Please advise us of equipment needs when booking so we can prepare the outfit and discuss sizing.

We generally travel between local fishing locations in a GVFFC vehicle. Clients can also use their own vehicle if preferred, with arrangements discussed beforehand. Your meeting point and starting time are confirmed when organising the trip.

Bring lunch and snacks, a hat, sunglasses and clothing suitable for changing weather. You are welcome to bring your own fishing equipment, or use what we supply.

You will need a current Victorian recreational fishing licence unless exempt. Please check the Victorian Fisheries Authority’s requirements before attending.

When We Fish

Guided fishing can be arranged throughout the year, subject to guide availability, conditions and suitable open waters. Local river fishing follows the applicable trout-season rules; year-round availability does not mean every river can be fished throughout winter.

Staying for More Than One Day?

Several guided days can be arranged for anglers wanting to spend longer in the district. Depending on conditions, we can discuss different waters and a balance of fishing that suits your group.

A bank-and-wade day can also form part of a longer visit that includes drift boating, with each service quoted separately. We can help with local accommodation suggestions when planning your stay.
