Private Streamcraft Lessons

Learn to Read Rivers — and Fish Them With Confidence

Streamcraft is the difference between fishing and understanding a river.

These lessons are designed for anglers who can already cast and rig a rod, but feel they’re missing something — unsure where fish are holding, why certain water produces and other water doesn’t, or why success feels inconsistent despite “doing the right things.”

Our Private Streamcraft Lessons focus on decision-making, observation, and execution on real rivers, under real conditions.

Streamcraft Lessons will have you catching fish in no time.

Who These Lessons Are For

Streamcraft lessons are ideal if you:

  • Want to move beyond basic skills and catch fish more consistently

  • Feel uncertain about where to fish and why

  • Want to understand trout behaviour rather than guess at it

  • Are ready to refine your river fishing with experienced guidance

This is often the most important step an angler takes after learning to cast.

Experience That Comes From Time on the Water

Our instruction is shaped by decades of daily river fishing, not theory.

Our guiding team has spent a lifetime on rivers including:

  • The Goulburn and Rubicon systems

  • The Snowy Mountains

  • New Zealand’s South Island

  • Montana and the American West

From guides with more than 70 years fishing local rivers, to others who have devoted over a decade to teaching fly fishing full-time, the common thread is lived experience and a calm, practical teaching style.

What a Streamcraft Lesson Covers

Every session is tailored to the angler and the conditions, but typically includes:

  • Choosing productive water and understanding why it holds fish

  • Reading current seams, depth changes, structure, and cover

  • Trout positioning and feeding behaviour through the season

  • Stealth, approach angles, and positioning

  • Fly choice and fishing methods that suit the water

  • Achieving drag-free drifts in complex currents

  • Ethical and low-impact river practice

Casting is refined only as required — always in service of presentation and control, not technique for its own sake.

Location — Real Rivers, Real Learning

Based in Alexandra / Thornton, just two hours from Melbourne, we work primarily on the Goulburn River, with access to other high-quality systems when conditions suit.

There’s no substitute for learning streamcraft on water that actually holds trout.

Our Streamcraft Lessons are worth their weight in cold. They'll shave years off the learning process and advance you to the front of the queue.
