Fly fishing can begin with a single lesson and grow into something much larger.
For more than thirty years, Goulburn Valley Fly Fishing Centre has helped anglers learn the fundamentals, build confidence on local rivers, experience the Goulburn from a drift boat and eventually travel with us to New Zealand, Montana and Patagonia.
Some guests join us for one afternoon. Others begin with a workshop and continue fishing with us for decades.

Beginner Workshops
A calm, structured introduction for anyone who wants to learn properly from the beginning.
Our two-day beginner workshops cover casting, equipment, knots, trout behaviour, fly selection, streamcraft, river safety and the practical skills needed to start fishing independently.
All equipment is provided, the groups are kept small and nothing is assumed. The aim is not to overwhelm you with information, but to help you leave as a confident beginner with a clear understanding of what to practise next.
Many of our long-term clients began with this workshop.

Private Lessons and Streamcraft Tuition
Private tuition allows us to focus entirely on your casting, presentation, river reading and the areas where you most want to improve.
Some sessions take place on grass or still water and concentrate on casting mechanics. Others are conducted on the river, where we can work through approach, fly selection, rigging, line control and how to recognise the water most likely to hold trout.
The day is shaped around your current ability rather than a fixed lesson plan.
For beginners, that can mean slowing everything down and building sound habits. For experienced anglers, it may involve improving accuracy, managing complex currents or preparing for a specific destination such as New Zealand or Montana.

Fish the Goulburn
Private Guided River Fishing
A guided day provides access to local knowledge that normally takes years to build.
The Goulburn and the surrounding district change constantly. Flows rise and fall, water clarity shifts, hatches develop and trout move according to conditions. Our role is to choose the water that best suits the day, your experience and the style of fishing you enjoy.
Guided fishing can be arranged as a half day or full day for one or two anglers. Equipment and flies are available where required.
The experience may be instructional, highly focused or simply an enjoyable day on the river with someone who knows the district well.

Drift Boat Fly Fishing
We introduced guided floating trips to the Goulburn in 1994 and have spent more than thirty years refining the experience.
A drift boat allows us to fish long, connected sections of river that cannot be properly explored on foot. Over a full day, we may cover between 15 and 25 kilometres, moving quietly through riffles, glides, banks, side channels and holding water that is difficult or impossible to reach by wading.
Boat position is central to the fishing. Small adjustments in angle, speed and distance create better presentations and allow both anglers to spend more time fishing productive water.
Every trip is private, with one or two anglers per boat. Our guide team operates six purpose-built drift boats, allowing us to coordinate multi-boat days and multi-day programs for larger groups without reducing the level of personal attention.

Multi-Day Goulburn Programs
Some anglers want more than a single day.
A two, three or four-day program allows us to fish different sections of the river, respond to changing conditions and build greater continuity into both the fishing and instruction.
Groups can combine drift boat fishing, private guiding, casting tuition and streamcraft sessions. Larger parties can use several boats and rotate between guides over the course of the trip.
We can also assist with local accommodation and help shape the program around experience, mobility, available time and the goals of the group.

Travel With Us
Southland, New Zealand
Clear Water. Wild Brown Trout.
GVFFC has held a New Zealand Department of Conservation guiding concession in Southland since 2000.
Our Southland program is based at Dunrobin Station in the Aparima Valley and runs in structured weekly blocks from January through March.
Each week is limited to four anglers and includes six full days of guided fishing. Five days are conducted at a ratio of one guide to two anglers, while every guest receives one dedicated one-to-one guiding day.
The fishing may include freestone rivers, spring creeks, lakes and tailwaters. Each day is selected according to water levels, clarity, wind, weather and the experience of the group.
This is a long-established program rather than a one-off hosted tour. The structure, guide team, accommodation and daily decision-making have been refined over more than two decades.
The program includes:
- seven nights’ accommodation
- six full guided fishing days
- five days of 1:2 guiding
- one dedicated 1:1 day for every angler
- local transport throughout the week
- small groups and flexible daily planning

Montana
Three Regions. Nine Guided Days. One Complete Journey.
Our Montana program is a 13-day hosted journey through three distinct fishing regions.
The standard itinerary usually begins on the Missouri River near Craig, continues through southwest Montana and finishes in the greater Yellowstone region.
Each stage includes four nights’ accommodation and three professionally guided fishing days. The following day is used to travel to the next region, allowing the landscapes, towns and broader character of the American West to become part of the experience.
Standard departures are designed for four guests, with private rooms and one guide for every two anglers. Private groups of up to eight can also be accommodated by adding another host, vehicle, guiding team and suitable accommodation while preserving the same level of space, guiding and personal attention.
Returning guests and private groups can also build customised journeys using alternative regions such as Paradise Valley, the Bighorn River or eastern Idaho and the Teton Valley.
The standard journey includes:
- 13 days and 12 nights

Patagonia
Exceptional Fishing. Refined Lodging. One Carefully Hosted Week.
Each November, we host a small group in Trevelin, Patagonia, in partnership with Patagonia River Guides.
The week combines varied fishing with the comfort and hospitality of one of the region’s leading lodges.
Days may include spring creeks, freestone rivers, drift boat water and remote lakes, with each fishery chosen according to conditions, hatches and the preferences of the group.
Guiding is highly personal, often one angler per guide for walk-and-wade fishing. Evenings return guests to a refined lodge environment with private accommodation, excellent food, regional wine and time to recover properly before the next day.
The experience is designed for anglers who value both the fishing and everything surrounding it.
