Join us on an epic three day drift boat trip down the Goulburn River, just two hours drive from Melbourne’s C.B.D. Starting at Eildon Pondage and ending at Molesworth, some sixty river kilometres downstream some 56 hours later.
This is a true adventure located right here in our own backyard, a proverbial stone’s throw from home.
This trip takes three very full days and during that time you’ll get to fish every type of water and method the Goulburn has to offer. Gravel bars, backwaters, pools, runs, hopper banks, side channels, off-river lagoons. You’ll fish dry flies to rising fish. Blind search edges with rubber legged concoctions. Sight fish to browns mooching in shallow water. Nymph the drop offs, and even throw a streamer or two looking for a trophy fish in off the beaten path places they reside.
And for those who just can’t get enough, we can throw in an evening rise or three if you’re super-keen.
This really is a trip for those who want to jam in the maximum amount of fishing time in the shortest space of time. You’ll see a lot of wildlife over the course of the trip including platypus and eagles, and despite being only two hours from Melbourne, you’ll feel about a million miles away from the stresses of everyday life.
Sample Itinerary
DAY 1
Arrive late in the afternoon and check into your accommodation, then join us at our base of operations / Flyshop for a welcoming B.B.Q where you will meet the guides and discuss the fishing to come. Leave your gear with us and we will rig it for you with new leaders and flies, ready to go in the morning.
DAY 2
Have breakfast at the hotel and meet up at our flyshop at 9am. The boats and guides will be ready to go when you arrive. Grab a coffee and drive fifteen minutes to the top section of the river just below the pondage gates/outflow. Drift from Eildon to a private property at just downstream of Thornton.
DAY 3
Same routine as previous day however we will drift from Thornton to Alexandra. Option to finish on dark (doing the evening rise) and then we’ll drop you back where your dinner will be waiting or you can put in your order at the pub and we will have it delivered to us so that you can have dinner on the river.
DAY 4:
Drift all day starting near Alexandra and ending on a private property near Molesworth that afternoon. Finish slightly earlier and head back for an early dinner, then go back out for a short evening drift to round out the trip.
Of course this is a sample itinerary and it can be amended to suit your group’s particular needs and or even modified each day. For example, you may wish to start fishing earlier than 9am and be back in time for dinner at a restaurant, or you may wish to stay out for the evening rise and have dinner brought to you. Alternatively, you may choose to go out early and have a break in the heat of the afternoon, then go out again for a three hour evening drift near dark.
We are here to make this trip a special one for you, one that you’ll be reminiscing about for a long time to come.
FOOD
We will provide you with a healthy lunch on all three days, plenty of cold drinks (water and soft drinks), as well as tea and coffee. Dinner and breakfast can be eaten at any number of hotels, cafes and restaurants, all within a minute’s walk of your room.
DINING OPTIONS
Superb breakfasts and dinners can be found at any number of places in the centre of Alexandra. Please ask for a recommendation if you need a friendly point in the right direction.
Standouts are:
The Alexandra Hotel
The Commercial Hotel
Grant Street Grocer
This trip is suitable for fly fishers of any age, fitness/skill level. Our boats comfortably accommodate two fly fishers and a guide, and we have four boats available so we can cater for up to eight people per trip.
Multi-boat drifts are a great way to explore this river with a group of friends. Fishing two or more boats together maximises the catch rate as we can cover every square inch of river. It’s also a very social outing as we often leapfrog each other throughout the day, as well as swap fishing partners so that everyone gets the opportunity to fish with each other while observing covid protocols. On the multi-boat trips we can also have lunch together while anchored in the shade.
So if you’re unable to embark on your usual trips this season due to restrictions on international travel, drop us a line and book one of these multi-day trips. The trips are available at any time on arrangement and we cannot stress what great value they are as they are not the usual 9-5 that everyone else offers.
Please phone us on 03 5773 2513 or 0418 995 611 to discuss the options. We are available from 8am – 10pm, every day.
